Biography

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Amy Moodie has been keeping busy by teaching voice and piano online, posting many videos of herself singing uplifting songs (accompanied by autoharp) on YouTube and Instagram, and performing the role of Despina in a socially distant outdoor concert of Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte. In recent months, Amy has been working on a spooky performance piece for A Good Mess Opera Theatre’s upcoming online performances of A Good Haunting and will be revisiting the role of Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance with COSA Canada this winter! Prior to the pandemic, Amy rang in 2020 by being selected as the winner of the Toronto Mozart Vocal Competition and was featured in a virtual concert in the fall of 2020. When the pandemic hit, she was on tour with the Elmer Iseler Singers in Western Canada.

In the fall of 2019, she was a finalist at the American International Czech and Slovak Voice Competition and was named as a prizewinner for her interpretations of Aux Langueurs d’Apollon (Rameau) and Smutný večer (Kapralova). Earlier in the season, Amy performed the roles of Emma in Fierabras (Opera in Concert), Zerlina in Don Giovanni (Estates Theatre, Prague) and sang contemporary opera scenes in This is Prophetic! with U of T opera and Against the Grain Theatre. The 2018-2019 season also included performances of Vivaldi’s Gloria, Papagena in Die Zauberflöte and the title role in Handel’s Semele.

In the fall of 2017, Amy was selected as the winner of the NATSAA Great Lakes Region Competition and, in early 2018, was a finalist and winner of the Harold Stark Award at the National competition in New York City. Also in the fall of 2017, Amy performed with the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Women’s Choruses as the soloist in Imant Raminsh’s Missa Brevis in C Minor under the baton of Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt, and was selected as the Vocal Category Second Place Cash Prize Winner and Winner of the prize for Best Performance of a Canadian Composition at the Vancouver International Music Competition. Amy was a National Finalist in the NATS Musical Theatre Competition in Boston in 2014.

As an active performer on the concert stage, in operas and in musicals, Amy has recently been seen in Isis and Osiris (World Premier), Falstaff and Prince Igor (Opera in Concert), as Voluptua in La Pizza con Funghi (Yorkshire Opera Workshop), and as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance (VAOP). Other credits include Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie (CMTP Toronto), Sister Robert Ann in Nunsense! (Orillia Stage Company) and as Anne Egerman in A Little Night Music (Halifax Summer Opera Festival). Amy has given recitals in Toronto, Barrie and Oakville and, in 2017, premiered Side Road Swamp by Karen Lee and Francis Ubertelli as part of the Sounds of Silence new art song project at the University of Toronto. Amy has been engaged as a soloist with Symphony on the Bay and KooGle Theatre, with the King Edward Choir of Barrie, The Oakville Choral Society and many other organizations. She has been seen on screen in national commercials and is the singing voice of Sofie on Little People (Family Jr.).

Amy holds her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the University of Toronto where she studied with Professor Lorna MacDonald. During her Masters, she was a two-time recipient of the prestigious Richard Bradshaw Fellowship in Opera (2016-2018). Amy further studied vocal pedagogy with master teacher Jeanie Lovetri and completed teacher training in Somatic Voicework℠ The LoVetri Method at the CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute at Shenandoah University in 2015. Amy is a graduate of the Etobicoke School of the Arts where she majored in Musical Theatre. Her musical theatre training also includes intensives at Circle in the Square Theatre School (2009) and the Stella Adler Studio (2014), both in New York City.

Amy is a NATS member in good standing.
